Description

‘’In all the years I have been driving, I cannot remember ever driving a car that I would have liked to own more’’ – Sir Stirling Moss

This particular example is a UK supplied original RHD 1969 Mercedes Benz 280 SL Pagoda. ‘Pagoda’ alludes to the Far East Buddhist temples which give rise to the vehicles exotic design of the removable coupe roof. The inwardly pointing curvature and the concave form of the roof designed by Paul Bracq are reminiscent of the curved roofs of the Far Eastern Buddhist temples. Between 1963-1971 a total of 48,912 Mercedes SL’s rolled of the production line including: 230SL, 250SL and 280SL. There are currently only 2,345 Mercedes 280SL Pagoda examples registered in United Kingdom.

Finished in Tunis Beige (colour needs double-checking) with full red leather interior the owner began the arduous task of restoring this vehicle in 1989. The process took 6 years and the restoration journey was divided into three stages: the bodywork, the engine and the interior. The first stage included preparing and stripping the vehicle down to its chassis, nuts and bolts. The body shell was rebuilt with nearly all new components which were genuine Mercedes-Benz parts which included: front wings, front headlamp bowls, inner and outer sills, near side and outer side floor panels and the complete boot floor. The vehicle was re-levelled, primed and re-sprayed in the original Tunis Beige colour. All chromed aluminium parts were replaced as well as the necessary seals and rubbers.

Stage two of the restoration was to strip the vehicle of all its mechanical components. The engine was rebuilt and rebored with 6 new pistons and the crankshaft reground and new shells fitted. The water pump was replaced and the cylinder head overhauled, as well as 6 new injectors fitted. The front and rear suspension were overhauled and discs, pads and rear shoes were all replaced.

The final phrase included a complete re-trim of the interior using the correct leather and carpets. This example is one of the very best offered to the market as every detail about this vehicle from the dials and switches to the chrome work and interior trim is unblemished. The previous owner cared for this vehicle in such a way that it was housed in a heated garaged and only driven during the summer months. The Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda would make both a comfortable and luxurious grand tourer as well as a smart investment for any Mercedes enthusiast.
