The Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing is considered as one of the most beautiful classics of all time. Launched in 1952, it was the fasted production car at the time and oozed class, sophistication and pedigree. The upward-rising gullwing doors radiated originality and elegance never seen before and legend has it that one New York dealer called Max Hoffman persuaded the factory to build a road version and personally funded the first 500 cars. This was a masterpiece built purely from desire which later became an icon with values reaching and surpassing £800,000. An icon like this was never to be built again until the release of the Mercedes-Benz SLS 63 AMG.
The Mercedes-Benz SLS produces 583 horsepower from its 6.2 litre naturally aspirated V8 and mimics the gullwing doors of the infamous 300SL. Finished in ‘Himalayas Grey Metallic’ combined with the classic contrasting black interior this particular example was first registered in the United Kingdom on 13 July 2010. The previous keeper enjoyed and meticulously cared for the vehicle for 3 years before deciding it was the suitable time to part ways and entrust this future classic with GVE. There are believed to have been a total of 6,500 units produced but there are currently only 249 registered coupe models in the UK. This particular RHD example includes full service history from both Mercedes-Benz main dealer and accredited Mercedes-Benz specialists.
Circling around this car brings back many emotions originally felt by the owners of the original 300SL and it is highly likely that another gullwing model such as this won’t be built by Mercedes-Benz in the future. The 25,000 miles travelled in this particular example has been accompanied by pure joy and satisfaction and we’re certain that the next owner will experience the very same emotions.
