Performance is seriously rapid, while the chassis set-up is capable yet comfortable. The Porsche 911 cabin is beautifully finished, too. It Does everything you want a supercar to do, plus plenty more besides. The Porsche 911’s sheer breadth of talent is a real achievement.

Performance in the 394bhp S and 4S models is absolutely stunning, but even the 345bhp Carrera and Carrera 4 cars will hit 62mph in less than five seconds. The seven-speed manual gearbox is surprisingly easy to get to grips with, while the optional seven-speed PDK semi-auto flatters the driver at speed and is a natural choice for city-dwelling supercar owners.

The 911 has a very accomplished ride, even at low speeds on poor surfaces, and there’s an amazing amount of lateral grip available; you’d need explosives to shake the thing off line. The steering could be more communicative, but it’s sharp and precise, so is still a joy to use on your favourite B-road. The Carrera 4 and 4S models have four-wheel drive to improve the already sensational traction.

The tyres generate quite a lot of road noise over coarse surfaces, but on smoother roads there’s little to disturb the peace. That means the 911 can play the long distance GT as well as the supercar. Don’t worry, though - the exhaust note still thrills at higher revs.

Porsche's iconic 911 model has remained at the pinnacle of the sports car sector for decades, thanks to a sound basic formula and a consistent programme of updates and improvements. There is also a model to suit the most demanding buyers, and this naturally aspirated four-wheel drive 911 fills a gap in the range.

The 997-series Porsche 911 is already an exceptional performance car, offering the unmistakable silhouette which has remained a firm favourite with sports car buyers without looking outdated. A series of wheel and exterior styling packages allow further tailoring, but the inherent proportions and details are simple and attractive. Externally, the rear wheel arches are wider on four-wheel drive models, as are the rear wheel widths, distinguishing them subtly from the two-wheel drive models.

For all the car's performance bias, it can also be successfully used on a daily basis. Blurring the line between hyper car and Grand Tourer, the 911 offers excellent levels of cabin refinement plus a wide range of standard and option comfort equipment. It's practical too, with a reasonable amount of space available in the front boot - the engine is in the back.
