Wraps come off Mercedes GLE Coupe
Detroit debut for GLE Coupe, set to rival BMW X6 with prices starting from £53k.
The new Mercedes GLE Coupe has been revealed ahead of its launch next year, and we’ve been granted early access to the car designed to steal sales from the BMW X6.
Axel Heix, Mercedes’ programme director of SUVs and SUCs, told us: “The main idea of this car was to combine the best of two worlds – the best of the SUV world, and the best of the coupe world. You can see this in the body and proportion of the car.”
While the car in our studio shots will share its platform with the standard GLE – a rebadged, new version of the M-Class also due next year – the body couldn’t be more different. Thanks to a steeply raked windscreen, even the front doors are unique, while the sloping roofline and sharper bumper designs mark it out further.
Initially, the GLE Coupe will only be offered with a range of six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. That will include a 255bhp diesel 350d, as well as a 329bhp 400 petrol and a 362bhp 450 AMG. Although unconfirmed, it’s likely Mercedes will also offer a 5.5-litre V8 AMG GLE Coupe 63 before too long.
Inside, the sloping roofline means tall adults will struggle for rear headroom, but there’s still plenty of legroom. The boot has 670 litres of space, which is bigger than the X6’s (580 litres) and also the seven-seat X5’s with the back seats folded (650 litres).
