Hardcore Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series teased?

It appears Mercedes is readying an even faster and harder version of it new supercar,the AMG GT. A racier looking prototype was previously spotted lapping the Nurburgring, and now a teaser video hints at a more track-ready model to be revealed very soon.

It’s likely the car will be badge ‘Black Series’, the traditional nameplate for AMG’s most hardcore and ballistic variant in the range. Since we’re seeing what looks like one testing already, we expect the faster AMG GT to debut in late 2016, and will get more power and sharper handling to take on the Porsche 911 GT3 and newly renamed Aston Martin Vantage GT12.

The video doesn’t give much away but you can hear a V8-engined model blasting around the Hockenheim race circuit in Germany, followed by the phrase “Something fast is coming”. Even though the AMG GT is a brand new car and the extreme Black Series variants usually appear at the end of the model’s lifecycle, it seems the most logical step on from the current range of the two-door coupe, with the ‘standard’ 456bhp car, and the 503bhp ‘S’ and ‘Edition 1’ specs.

Our spy shots of a testing prototype show racier styling additions including a purposeful front splitter, albeit one that’s slightly toned down from the GT3 championship race car we saw at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show in March. There are also large intakes at the front and new ones in the bonnet, while carbon-fibre louvres channel air over the sculpted body.

Not much else has been changed on the exterior of the car, but we expect a production version to get bigger wheels, tyres and uprated brakes as standard, along with stiffer springs and revised steering. There will likely also be weight-saving measures including the carbon-fibre roof seen here, dropping the weight by anything up to 100kg.

Power should be up, too, with the 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 benefiting from tweaks to boost it by at least 50bhp over the GT S, which already has 503bhp. Torque should also rise and the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission will be worked on, all of which will help to improve the standard GT’s already impressive 0-62mph time of 3.7 seconds. Prices are estimated to rise to around £135,000.
