Car Respray Aftercare: How to Maintain Your New Paint Job | GVE London – Blog
Protect your fresh car respray with smart aftercare tips—when to wash, wax, park, and touch up chips to keep that flawless finish looking brand new.
Here you are with your freshly resprayed car. The end product looks flawless, absolutely meeting your expectations. It is like looking at your car for the first time again. Time for reality to sink in… now what? How does one take care of this too-perfect-to-touch look? A quality car respray costs a pretty pound, so you’d want to protect it at all costs.
So, let’s talk about the aftercare of a freshly painted car.
Don’t Wash It Right Away
The first thing to do is not wash it, and it’s a big one. After a car respray, you might be tempted to go home and wash your car. That should make it extra clean, right? The logic is sound, but unfortunately, that isn’t the case and this is a big no. You see, even though the paint may look dry, it needs time to cure; underneath, it is still settling.
Give your car at least two weeks before washing it. Let the paint harden properly first. If you’re super tempted to rub the dust off (we recommend holding off on that), use a clean and dry microfibre cloth to rub it off gently.
P.S: We’ll mention in this section itself that you ought to hold off on waxing for at least 60 days also. The paint needs to breathe, and applying wax too early traps solvents and slows down the curing process. That can cause hazing or make the paint look patchy.
Watch Where You Park
As flashy as your luxury respray looks underneath the rays of the sun out in the open, it has some enemies. We’ve got sunlight, though that isn’t a super major issue in the UK. However, there are still birds, winds that carry grime, rain, tree sap, street grime; we could go on but the point has been made.
Try parking in a garage or shaded area whenever possible. If that’s not an option, consider using a breathable car cover. Not one of those cheap plastic ones, as those can trap moisture and leave marks. Look for covers made from soft, non-abrasive fabric. A little parking discipline goes a long way.

Be Gentle With It
Treat your car the way you’d treat someone else’s luxury car for some time. What does that mean? Well, try not to:
- Lean on it
- Sit on it
- Place bags or tools on it
And other such activities that could cause the paint to chip. Remember, new paint might feel solid, but it is vulnerable on the inside. Not so unlike us people.
Touch Up Small Chips Quickly
Accidents can happen anytime, and it’s nobody’s fault sometimes; hence the name accident. If you notice a chip, don’t ignore it. Left untreated, moisture can get under the paint and lead to bubbling or rust. Use matching touch-up paint from your car respray centre, or go back in and let them do the repair. Quick fixes now can save a much bigger headache later.

Frequently Asked Questions
You can, but only once the paint has cured completely. That usually means waiting at least 60 to 90 days. Polishing too soon can drag particles across soft paint and leave permanent marks.
It can. A professional luxury car respray done by a trusted car respray centre may actually increase value, especially if it corrects worn or faded original paint. But low-quality resprays or colour changes that don’t suit the car can hurt resale value.
Yes, especially in the first few days. That’s just the paint settling. Avoid touching it during this time, and keep the surface free of debris.
