The Lamborghini Huracan Spyder has been unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show – giving us a taste for the full-blooded V10 drop-top before it goes on sale next year.
UK prices have not yet been revealed, although we expect a £10,000 increase over the Huracan coupe (which starts at £180,720) when the roadster arrives in showrooms next spring.
Using the same 602bhp naturally-aspirated V10 engine and four-wheel drive system as the Huracan coupe, the Spyder gains an electric soft-top roof that can fold away in 17 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph.
Lamborghini claims the Huracan Spyder is in keeping with the principle of ‘form follows function’, insisting the new convertible is as exciting to look at as it is to drive. It accelerates from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds (two tenths slower than the coupe) and will do 201mph in top gear. The Spyder also includes a host of new technical features for the 2016 model year, including cylinder on demand and fuel-saving stop/start technology.
Understandably, the most striking difference between the standard Huracan and the Spyder is the lack of a roof. Lamborghini says the roof is “hidden away into the most efficient space possible” – helping maintain the Spyder’s low centre of gravity and sporty drive.
From the front, the Spyder mimics its fixed-roof sibling, with gaping air vents, sharp creases and distinctive LED daytime running lights. The side sills have been carried over, as have the kinks in the doors and rear three-quarter panels. The rear window is electrically operated and can be lowered from the cabin to better accentuate the roar from that 5.2-litre V10.
The rear of the car gets the same LED light clusters and quad exhaust setup as the coupe, while a pair of movable fins have been developed that run from the seat backs to the rear spoiler. An integrated duct is said to reduce turbulence during open top driving.
Huracan Spyder buyers will be given a choice of 11 body colours and three roof options, as well as 17 interior hues and five trim choices. The Ad Personam personalisation scheme offers scope for further individualisation, including the option of five matte exterior colours.
Standard kit on all Huracan Spyders includes LED headlamps, 20-inch Giano alloy wheels and Lamborghini’s new Infotainment System II. Options will include a new exterior styling pack, Sensonum stereo and a dynamic steering package.
The Huracan’s aluminium and carbon chassis is 40 per cent stiffer than its predecessor, the Gallardo Spyder, producing 50 per cent more downforce. Lamborghini claims a 43:57 front-rear weight distribution with a rear-mounted differential lock. The Huracan redlines at 8,700rpm, with peak power generated from 8,250rpm. The full 560Nm of torque is developed at 6,500rpm, with 0-124mph taking 10.2 seconds.
